My name is Nicholas Swift and what follows is a little insight as to who I am.
I was born in Leicester, England and moved to Southern California when I was eight. I lived in Palm Springs for a few wonderful years, which peeked my love for golf. However, after moving to San Diego, I feel in love with the beach and now battle with how I choose to spend my weekend.
When I was in the fourth grade, my neighbor set fire to her backyard. Before the fire department arrived, my brother and I were able to extinguish the fire using a small garden hose and a shovel. I then knew that I wanted to be a fire fighter. After graduating from Rancho Bernardo High School, I attended San Diego State, where I received my B.A. in English. Simultaneously, I was taking Fire Science classes at Miramar College and volunteering as a Fire Fighter in Ramona. In 2006, I graduated SDSU and started my career as a full time Fire Fighter. I quickly promoted to Captain and was offered the opportunity to teach Fire Academies throughout San Diego. After teaching several Fire Academies, I realized I also wanted to pursue a career in Education.
This past year, I was offered the opportunity to share this experience with high school students, creating a Fire Science program at a charter school called Health Sciences High Middle College. The program I created mirrors all the full time/paid fire academies that I have taught, as the students learn fire suppression techniques, fire fighter skills and emergency medical response. I approach the students in the same manner establishing the program on three core values: Communication, teamwork and discipline. I believe that these core values, when implemented properly, create successful individuals. I just completed my first year with this pilot program and I can proudly say that the students who participated in my program, have become more confident and more organized. Staff throughout the school have seen the positive results of my program. Moreover, parents have contacted me, expressing their happiness as the the results of this program are improving the students lives at home. I hope in the near future to expand this program, offering it to other schools throughout the United States. I believe that this Masters program will aid me, as I will become a better leader and learn more ways to incorporate technology into my program.
Personally, I am a very lucky man. I have been married to my beautiful wife Jenelle and we celebrate our first anniversary September the 28th. We have a wonderful son named Aiden, who just started kindergarten. I have an English lab named Rusty and he is our other son. As I said earlier, I battle on the weekends as to whether or not I should spend time on the golf course or the beach. To eloborate, that means teaching Jenelle and Aiden golf, or spending time with my brother on my paddle board. He and I are both active in paddle board races around the pacific coast and it is such a blessing. Other than that, you will find me in the kitchen cooking, as it is a true passion of mine.
